Egypt, reign of Psamtik III. Late period, end of 26th - 27th dynasty, ca. 520 BCE. Fine blue-green glazed faience pottery ushabti of Psamtik III born of Meri-Neith. Depicted standing on a trapezoidal base and raised pillar at the back, molded in mummiform, wearing a tripartite wig and plaited divine beard. The finely detailed face is defined with a slight smile, beautifully detailed almond-shaped eyes, with arms crossed over the chest, hands protruding from the shroud, the fists holding an adze and hoe for work in the afterlife, and the right hand also holding a twisted rope connected to a seed basket behind the left shoulder.
The legs are inscribed with nine registers of incised hieroglyphs forming part of Chapter 6 of The Book of The Dead, and translates: “...The illuminated, the Osiris, the Overseer of the writers of the royal meal, Psamtik, born of Meri-Neith, true of voice...”
A top quality, beautiful example. Custom bronze base. Size: 8”H x 2.25”W (20.3 x 5.7cm).
