Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya culture, ca. 700 to 1600 CE. A distinctive Quimbaya pottery figure constructed from square and rectangular slabs of clay forming the head and torso, with heavy coils attached for the arms and legs. The neck is defined by a deep encircling groove with minimal additional modeling, a characteristic feature of this type. The right arm is raised with the palm open, as if throwing or holding an object, while the left arm bends inward toward the body. The legs are bent with the feet set firmly and squarely on the ground. Grooves below the knees and around the wrists and upper arms indicate the former presence of arm and leg bands. The face is composed of long horizontal slit eyes and mouth, contrasted by a prominently and more naturalistically modeled nose. The figure exemplifies the structural, slab-built aesthetic associated with Quimbaya ceramic sculpture, combining simplified geometry with selective realism in facial detail. Size: 5.8" W x 7.5" H (14.7 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: private St. Petersburg, Florida, USA collection imported into US before 1990
