Description:

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire, circa 12th to 13th century CE. A rare bronze mold, shaped like a lotus blossom, featuring a seated Buddha in full lotus position, embodying serene meditation. The Buddha rests his hands in the Dhyana mudra - symbolizing inner contemplation - while seated upon a pedestal. The leafy canopy above likely represents the sacred Bodhi tree, alluding to the moment of enlightenment. Such molds were used to produce clay votive figures for personal devotion, particularly among the Khmer middle class. While the resulting clay images were made in large quantities, the bronze mold itself is a singular artifact. It offers a rare glimpse into the artistic production methods of Khmer sculptors and stands as a fascinating testament to the devotional and artistic culture of the Angkorian period. Size: 3" W x 5.5" H (7.6 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from a Los Angeles, California, USA gallery from the late 1990s to 2005
