Description:

West Africa, Mali, Dogon Culture, ca. early 20th century CE. An iron neckrest forged with a curved top platform supported by a single vertical shaft and an angled brace in the form of a human figure holding up the curved plate. Heavy surface patination consistent with prolonged age and use. These iron neckrests, though rare compared to their wooden counterparts, are associated with prestige and were used by elders or diviners to protect elaborate coiffures during sleep. Mounted on a custom base. Size: 12.25" L x 3.1" W x 6" H (31.1 cm x 7.9 cm x 15.2 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.
