Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A dazzling fusion of antiquity and neoclassical refinement, this ring showcases a Roman citrine intaglio set in an ornate 19th-century European gold mount. The oval citrine, glowing in warm amber tones, is engraved with the image of a perched eagle positioned at the right, its body facing right while its head turns left in a vigilant pose. Before the eagle's beak is a small wreath, likely a symbol of victory or divine offering, and to the left of the scene is an abstract form, possibly a lyre or bucranium, hinting at musical or sacrificial associations. Carved between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE, the intaglio was elegantly repurposed in a neoclassical gold setting, its twisted rope border and scrolling openwork shoulders exemplifying the 19th-century's reverence for classical antiquity. Size of intaglio: 0.5" Diameter (1.3 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.9" W (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 5; gold quality: 82.7% (19.8 karats); weight: 4.9 grams
