Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast lead-copper alloy votive plaque of square form, one side depicting a prominent anchor framed within a heavy border. To the left of the anchor, faint incised letters are still visible though no longer legible. The reverse is decorated with a simple diamond pattern, providing a textured counterbalance to the figural side. The anchor itself recalls those used on the famed Nemi ships commissioned by the emperor Caligula in the 1st century CE. Plaques of this type were likely presented as votive offerings at sanctuaries devoted to maritime deities, dedicated by sailors or merchants in hopes of securing divine favor and safe passage across treacherous waters. Alternately, its substantial weight and compact form suggest it may also have functioned as a practical weight while retaining symbolic value. This dual role underscores the Roman blending of religious devotion with everyday utilitarian objects. Size: 1.65" W x 1.75" H (4.2 cm x 4.4 cm)
