Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare and finely cast silver amulet depicting a clenched fist tightly gripping an erect phallus, rendered with bold anatomical detail. Above the fist rises a suspension loop, allowing the object to be worn as a pendant for protection. Such phallic amulets, known as fascina, were believed to ward off evil and provide both apotropaic power and fertility. This particular example is especially striking, with the clenched hand amplifying the protective potency of the phallus. The combination of hand gestures and phallic imagery was deeply rooted in Roman popular religion, drawing on traditions of the fascinus, the divine embodiment of the phallus worshipped as a guardian against envy and harm. Amulets like this would have been worn by both men and children, or hung in households, to ensure protection and good fortune. Size: 1.1" L x 0.9" W (2.8 cm x 2.3 cm); silver quality: 86%; weight: 6 grams

Rich patina across the surface highlights its age and ancient handling, while the silver composition underscores the status of its original owner. A powerful relic of Roman belief in the protective magic of sexuality and gesture.
