Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A finely cast Roman leaded bronze statuette depicting a spirited horse captured mid-stride, standing proudly atop a tiered plinth. The animal is shown with one foreleg raised in a prancing posture, its muscular form carefully modeled with a ridged mane flowing along the crest of its neck. Perched atop its head rests a petite crown, an unusual and symbolic detail that likely marks the horse as a creature of prestige or divine association. The plinth beneath the horse, with its stepped profile, enhances the sense of monumentality, suggesting this piece may have been a scaled-down votive offering echoing larger equestrian monuments. Horses held great symbolic importance in Roman culture, representing strength, nobility, and triumph. Crowned horses, in particular, evoke associations with victory processions, divine favor, and the imperial cult. Size: 1.25" L x 0.5" W x 2" H (3.2 cm x 1.3 cm x 5.1 cm)

Its dark green patina, enriched by centuries of burial, testifies to its age while preserving crisp details of both the equine form and the architectural base. Statuettes of this type were often left as dedications at sanctuaries or shrines, serving as offerings of gratitude or petitions for success in battle, travel, or the races.
