Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A group of three hand-carved wooden masks, two of which represent characters from traditional Topeng dance-drama, while the third - significantly smaller - is a depiction of the mythical Barong. The Barong mask features bulging eyes, prominent teeth, and curved tusks, and the size suggests its role as a decorative object or protective talisman. The two larger masks depict men with goat hair mustaches, adorned with diadems, likely symbolizing royal or authoritative personas within the Topeng narrative. Subtle carved traits such as protruding teeth, unruly facial hair, or bulging eyes often allude to a character's moral flaws or uncultivated nature, reflecting the nuanced storytelling traditions of Balinese performance arts. Size: 8" L x 5.3" W (20.3 cm x 13.5 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 - 2005
