Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid-20th century CE. A brass astrological talisman pendant, strung on a nickel-brass chain, featuring auspicious motifs. The circular disc, gently rubbed from years of touch, is decorated with a radiating lotus design framing the twelve zodiac animals encircling eight bagua trigrams. At the center rests the Mewa, a numerological magic square divided into 9 sections. The bagua, also known as parkha, symbolize elemental forces and the balance of yin and yang, while the Mewa serve divinatory purposes in Tibetan astrological practice. The verso is smoothly convex and highly polished, allowing the pendant to also function as a ritual mirror. A short brass chain, joined by a simple loop, suspends the pendant, though it can be easily restrung if desired. Tibetans regarded these pendants as powerful protective charms, believed to shield the wearer and ward off harmful influences. Size: 1.7" Diameter (4.3 cm); chain: 15" L (38.1 cm)
