Lot 101B
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A painted Tibetan thangka on canvas, featuring a striking mandala composition with concentric iconographic elements denoting sacred cosmology. The central square palace - structured with T-shaped gates - is surrounded by symbolic patterns representative of a tantric Buddhist spiritual diagram. The painted textile is bordered by faint stitch holes indicating it was once sewn onto a broader silk or cotton backing in traditional scroll form. Though currently secured within a modern black frame using simple push tacks, the panel remains unstretched and can be professionally re-mounted under glass or within a traditional textile mount for enhanced conservation and presentation. The pigments were XRF tested and includes arsenic in the green and mercury in the red, historically consistent with 19th to early 20th century thangka paintings. Size of textile: 15.5" L x 13.75" W (39.4 cm x 34.9 cm); frame: 24" L x 17.75" W (61 cm x 45.1 cm)
