Description:

Africa, Madagascar, early to mid-Triassic period, ca. 252 to 220 million years ago. A fossilized petrified wood slab retaining its natural bark exterior, with one face polished to a mirror-like finish and the reverse polished to a softer sheen, revealing concentric growth rings, mineral banding, and several glittering quartz-filled vugs scattered throughout. Possibly representing a fossilized Araucaria softwood tree, the specimen formed when the tree was buried under sediment in an oxygen-poor environment that halted decay, allowing mineral-rich water to permeate the cellular structure over time and replace the wood with stone, producing its distinctive coloration and crystalline features. Size: 8.75" Diameter x 0.6" W (22.2 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
