Description:

Ancient Mediterranean, Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 8th to 7th century BCE. A substantial Villanovan impasto amphora distinguished by its confident proportions and sculptural surface. The vessel features a broad, biconical body rising to a tall, flaring neck, flanked by a pair of robust vertical handles that lend both balance and visual strength. The dark, coarse impasto fabric is characteristic of early Iron Age ceramics, valued for its durability and tactile presence. Encircling the shoulder is a band of impressed and modeled decoration, with rhythmic bosses and incised motifs that animate the surface and catch the light. These decorative elements reflect Villanovan preferences for abstract patterning and textural contrast, transforming a utilitarian form into an object of visual authority. Size: 6.8" Diameter x 7.5" H (17.3 cm x 19 cm)

Amphorae of this type were used for storage and display, and are closely associated with domestic life and funerary contexts in early central Italy. With its harmonious form, expressive decoration, and strong architectural profile, this vessel offers a compelling example of Villanovan ceramic tradition and the roots of later Etruscan artistry.
