Description:

East Asia, Japan, Keicho era, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A fine wakizashi sword attributed to Fujiwara Sadayuki, a smith of the Takada school in Bungo Province, active during the Keicho era (1596-1615). This traditionally forged blade is signed (mei) on the tang, and is accompanied by a scanned copy of the Japanese registration card (Torokusho) and certification papers verifying its age and attribution. The blade has a vibrant midare hamon (irregular temper line), visible hada (grain structure). It is housed in both a decorative koshirae featuring lacquered black saya with sprinkled mother-of-pearl inlay and comes with a shirasaya (plain wooden storage scabbard) for preservation. The iron tsuba is decorated with a scene of a fisherman along a river with gilt. The tsuka (handle) is olive cord over rayskin, with copper dragon menuki visible beneath. The tang (nakago) has a deep, signed patina with twin mekugi-ana (peg holes) and clean file marks. Size in koshirae saya: 29" L x 2.6" W (73.7 cm x 6.6 cm); blade: 19" L x 1" W (48.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
