Yoshiiku (Japanese, 1833-1904). Twelve woodblocks from the series "Famous and Courageous Heroes of the Taiheiki" - Published in 1867. In these woodblock prints, Yoshiiku depicts samurai and daimyo who were active during the closing period of Japan's 16th century civil wars, just prior to the country's unification. Yoshiiku captured these heroes in a variety of situations: active combat, fending off wild animals or demons, strategically preparing for battle, or engaged in a heroic pose. All are of chuban size, a medium-sized format (approximately 7.5 x 10 inches), smaller than oban but larger than hosoban, and despite normal age wear, all demonstrate Yoshiku's penchant for dramatic composition, vibrant colors, and captivating details. About the Artist: Yoshiiku - also known as Ikkeisai Yoshiiku, Ochiai Yoshiiku, Ikujiro, Chokaro, Ikkeisai, Keiami, Keisai, and Sairakusai - was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Utagawa school. Born to a tea house owner, Yoshiiku early mentor was the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi.Yoshiiku is known for his prints of various themes: historic events, warriors, kabuki scenes and more. In addition, Yoshiiku created illustrations published in the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun (Tokyo Daily News) from 1874 to 1876. Yoshiiku made major contributions to the art of Japanese woodblock printmaking during the Meiji era.
