Lot 270
North America, United States, ca. mid-20th century CE. A commanding pair of mid-20th century leather batwing chaps, richly worn and boldly decorated, purportedly once worn by John Wayne. Broad in cut and dramatic in silhouette, these chaps embody the visual language of the American West as it galloped from working ranches onto the silver screen. Crafted from heavy brown leather with scalloped outer edges, the batwing form flares generously from thigh to calf, designed to protect the rider while creating a sweeping profile in the saddle. The surface bears the honest patina of use - creasing, surface wear, and tonal variation that speak to age and experience. Each leg is adorned with metal studs arranged into graphic motifs: a 5-pointed star, a crescent moon, and a shield. These emblems, repeated symmetrically, evoke classic Western iconography - symbols of frontier identity, state pride, and cinematic heroism. Size: 37.2" W x 38" H (94.5 cm x 96.5 cm)
Large conchos anchor leather ties that hang in narrow strands, while studded borders trace the contours of the leather in rhythmic lines. The waist yoke remains intact, with strap and buckle closures at the beltline and adjustable fittings along the legs. The overall construction reflects traditional Western saddlery techniques, built for durability as much as display. Purportedly worn by John Wayne, the archetypal cowboy of American film, these chaps carry an added aura of Hollywood legend. Whether considered as functional ranch wear, costume history, or a relic of Western cinema mythology, they stand as a striking artifact of mid-century American cowboy culture.
