Description:

Xantil. Mixtec / Aztec, Nahua culture, Late Post classic period, ca. 1200 - 1500 CE. Polychrome decorated pottery seated figure, depicting a shaman wearing an avian helmet mask with his face peering from within wide open birds beak, open toothy mouth. Both hands resting on his raised knees. Overall painted in colors of red-orange, blue, black and white. A nice example. Size: 11.75”H x 6.75”W (29.8 x 17.1cm).

Provenance: Collection of Justin Kerr and Dicey Taylor, NYC. Acquired mostly 1970 through the 1980’s.

  • Condition: Missing approximately half of the bird’s tail on the rear edge of the mask, and an element lost on the back top of his helmet. A 2-3/4” W. x 1-3/4”H. loss on the lower left side of the base rim. Arms and legs repaired and reattached with restoration over the break lines. A rim chip on the front base rim near his left leg. The multicolor painted decoration is in overall excellent original condition, with overall surface deposits.
