Peru, central coast, Chancay culture, ca. 1300 to 1438 CE. An intriguing pair of woven textiles from the Chancay culture, which flourished along Peruâs central coast prior to their conquest by the Chimú and, shortly thereafter, by the Inca in 1438 CE.
The first example is a delicate woven gauze, masterfully executed in a complex openwork technique that produces a mesmerizing pattern-on-pattern designâdepicting stylized fish arranged within a net-like motif. The second textile is a section of a bag, likely a chuspa (coca bag), featuring selvedge edges on both sides and a central register of five birds walking left, all set within a red and pink border and adorned with small tan tassels along the lower edge.
Together, these pieces exemplify the technical sophistication and aesthetic refinement of Chancay textile artisans, whose weavings remain among the most distinctive of ancient Andean art. Size of gauze: 12" W x 8.5" H (30.5 cm x 21.6 cm)
PROVENANCE: private Lake Worth, Florida, USA collection, acquired via descent in April 1997; ex-private American collection in Cyprus, acquired between 1957 to 1969, brought to USA in 1969

- Condition: Damaged. Each a fragment of a larger piece. Hole to center of gauze example - it being mounted upon old orange backing. Other in excellent condition but appears to be shortened as top selvedge is missing. Each with old collection label on reverse.
