Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo era, ca. 19th century CE. An elegant wakizashi, presented in complete koshirae with a curved blade mounted in traditional fittings. The tang (nakago), pierced with two mekugi-ana, bears a deep, natural patina attesting to its age and use. The habaki is comprised of a copper core with a second copper habaki fitted over it, one face richly gilded with an alloy of approximately 66% gold and 25% silver, imparting a warm, lustrous tone. The iron sukashi tsuba is Edo period, featuring a motif of a saddle and riding crop. The tsuka handle is two pieces of lacquered wood held together by the copper fuchi, a ring fitting, and kashira. The assembly is completed by a dark lacquered brown wood saya scabbard, presenting a refined and authentic example of Edo period craftsmanship. Size in saya: 22" L x 2.2" W (55.9 cm x 5.6 cm); blade: 15" L x 1" W (38.1 cm x 2.5 cm); gold quality 66% (equivalent to 16K); silver quality: 25%
